NEIGHBORHOOD INFO
The Haight-Ashbury rose to national prominence in the Civil Rights and Vietnam War era. During the Summer of Love in 1967, 100,000 people converged on this quaint and eclectic neighborhood bordering Golden Gate Park, one of the largest urban parks in the country. The Haight-Ashbury was home to flower children, hippies and some of the era’s most influential rock groups, including Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead.

Today, the district is one of the most vocal and progressive neighborhoods in the City, and a popular tourist destination. One will find many stores selling used and new clothing and music alongside head shops like the notorious Pipe Dreams.

Also notable are the Red Vic Theater and the Red Victorian B&B, which celebrates 100 years in 2004. Ideals of peace, social justice and ecology still resound from the Haight-Ashbury.

The Haight-Ashbury Beat is distributed to homes and businesses in the Haight-Ashbury district, Cole Valley and the Panhandle.
